But, I keep hearing about some other guy who is or has built kayaks (but they don't remember who or where).

Marc,

Among the legends of Texas kayak builders, none are more renowned than the wizard of wood - John Caldeira - lately of the South Pacific I believe, and the wizard of words - Kurt Maurer - who used to grace these pages daily but has been in absentia for far too long. Anyone know their whereabouts?
