Remember that the safety lines once grabbed need to have some slack. Having them too tight the boat limits their usefulness.

I tension mine with a piece of shock cord looped around the bow/stern toggles, does triple duty, tensions the safety lines so they look nice when not being used, keeps the toggles out of the water and allows the safety lines to become more slack when they are in use.
