I used 1/8" door skins on two S&G boats. On the fist one I used a light behind the plywood to see the voids and I cut around them (bought an extra sheet). On the 2nd one, there were so many voids I just used it voids and all. I have no doubt, that the boat is plenty strong but there is a point where your efforts deserve better materials. Okume is just really nice to work with, bends easier and instills a feeling that you are doing a worthwhile project. If I had 3 kids and wanted to build a few simple small kayaks for them, I wouldn't hesitate to use the door skins to save money.
