I think that the lesson should be that in strip construction at least the interior fiberglass needs to be oriented 45* to the strip direction.

That 'makes sense', but I don't see in the chart that they actually compared 45 deg orientation with the same layup at 90 degrees.
After the first panel with 1 layer of glass at 90 deg on each side, they moved to multiple layers with combinations of 45 and 90 degree orientation.
It's a pity they didn't do the '1 layer each side at 45deg' test, from what I can see.

Perhaps the 'diagonal'/bias orientation we sometimes use is a step in the right direction? (though I generally use 90 deg on the inside, where the 45 might do some good as well.)
