Maybe using staples means that an internal stem is less necessary, but without staples, an internal stem makes it so easy the glue the ends of the strips securely.

As you say, it isn't needed for strength; it just helps the building process. It is worth the tiny extra bit of weight to have such an easy way to secure the ends of the strips in place.

There are many different ways of achieving the same result, but using the methods I use, I suspect that the time taken to create an internal stem would be less than the extra time needed to securely hold the ends of the strips while the glue dried if I had no internal stem.
