The gaps are slightly different from the wood.

Even if you get the glue and dust mixture to look the same colour as the wood, it will be different when you apply the epoxy. The glue doesn't absorb the epoxy the way the timber does, so doesn't change colour in the same way as the timber.

The bigger the gap, the more reason there is to use a sliver of wood.
