You can do, and I do, the same basic thing with webbing. There is a technique around somewhere about how to do this, forget where. Someone's probably got it saved.

Just a webbing loop inserted in a sealed slot in the deck. I "glue" them in with caulk so if I need to replace them they can be removed and new ones put in their place.

Any rope/webbing will eventually break down in the UV of the sun and need replaced, so it's a good idea to not secure them to the boat in a permanent fashion.
