I find that the belt sander scarfing method described in Nick's book, "The Strip Built Kayak" on page 85 is so quick, easy and neat, that I believe it takes no more time to use two short strips than a single full length strip that has to be handled more carefully.

I glue the join on the forms, so there is no extra step involved.
