TO SCARF OR NOT TO SCARF that is the question. Jerry, when I first began my boat I was scarfing pieces together, took a lot of time. Next, I decided to try using butt joints, very fast but I did not like the appearance of the joint. I am now using a "modified" butt joint , fast and easy to create and looks good. I place all joints over station forms. First, I install one strip on the boat then I take the other strip, long enough to over lap the first by at least 3 to 4 in of the first and also extend past the end of the boat. I then use two spring clamps to secure the two overlapping pieces, one on either side of the joint. I then take my Japanese pull saw and make an angled cut through both strips centered over the station. I try to angle my cut about 30-45 degrees back towards the installed strip, that way, when I install the other strip I put glue into the joint and push the end between the station and the installed strip which helps to provide a tight joint. At this point I merely continue with gluing the second strip to the boat.

Just another option,
Mark
