Strip: taping the outside shear

Just a thought, has anyone ever not taped the shear on the outside of a kayak? I have three inch, nine ounce tape on the inside in one continuous length, each side, with the bow and stern filled back eight inches with epoxy/sawdust. I taped around the bow and stern, eight inches back from the ends with four inch glass. The kayak is an Outer Island at just a few eighths over eighteen feet. It will only be used on flat water for short excursions. I admit, I'm looking to save some weight. 'What could possibly go wrong?' Thanks for any input.
