To be brutally honest, I'd not take all the time to build a tandem until I was more experienced and knew exactly what I wanted myself "before" picking a design.

Like others have said, go play with rental or used production boats and then see what it is you want.

It just takes too long to build something you may not want after you build it otherwise.

Most of us didn't start out building kayaks, we started out paddling production boats gaining experience first, then started building knowing what features we wanted and what we could live without.
