SOF first is a really good idea. That way we can actually get out and paddle much more quickly and putz along the strip project(s) at a fun pace, instead of trying to get it done ASAP in order to get on the water.
Any leads on a good tandem SOF design? Can I just cut (plywood) or steam (laminate) ribs to the same dimensions as the forms for a cedar-strip boat and then run stringers on them? Ribs every foot? Every six inches? (I'm sure I'm wandering into some previously covered ground, so I apologize in advance for that, and would gladly accept a link in lieu of answers.)
We've paddled plastic and SOF boats before, and the SOF was MUCH better, even though it was a poorly-built, leaky antique, than the plastic boat. The used market in Kansas City is also just sparse, to say the least. That, and the fact that a homemade boat can be so much better for so much cheaper, is why I'm building. Plus, projects are fun, and building bikes has gotten a little ho-hum.
