Excellent advice. I wasn't going to wade into this but I just have to second this. My advice is almost always buy a cheap used boat, paddle some and learn what you really want, like and dislike in a boat before building one. A stripper is a BIG commitment to only find out latter you hate it. Plywood is not as bad but it's still a lot of work to find out you don't like the boat.
