"BUT MY QUESTION IS: Do most folks run the lines around the entire kayak or leave them off in the area of the coaming?"

I get sucked out of my kayak once in a while while playing in big surf. You can bet there is no time to locate and grab a deck line. On the way out keep your paddle in one hand and crab the coaming with the other hand. Now you can get organized and use deck lines for whatever else you need to do.

Deck lines running by the coaming are just something to occasionally bust your knuckles on while paddling.
