Boy I hate when I type a long reply, only to hit a button and somehow delete it. Let's try this again...
I use a gravity feed gun and a 60 gallon compressor (smaller will do fine). A gravity feed gun is a must due to the viscosity. The key to this setup is a really good water separator. I use a dual separator. The input to the gun is set around 35 PSI. I have a pressure control at the gun and control it down from there. I adjust the feed rate and spray a test pattern before shooting.
Cleaning the gun is critical. The key is to IMMEDIATELY pour reducer into the cup (after painting and after the cup is empty) and spray it for 30 seconds or so, and then open the flow adjuster and spray full flow with full pressure. Then take it apart and clean the parts and wire brush the nozzle. (A good gun should come with a brush sized for each nozzle.) If I plan to shoot another coat later on the same day, I spray reducer through the gun and leave a little in the cup so the reducer sits in the gun, then spray it out before shooting again.
Here is the critical step to spraying two-part clears- You have to lay down a tack coat first. Spray one layer and spray some on a test board. Check your test strip with your finger. When it gets tacky and wants to spider web when you pull your finger away, it is ready to start coating over. If you skip the tack layer you will certainly get runs. Once your tack coat is ready you can spray coat over coat, but on the verticals let it tack up a little before the second coat. I find by the time I go from bow to stern the bow is ready for another coat. This stuff builds up more than lacquer, so you don't need too many coats. Too many at a time will start to sag.
Give it a try. The rapid cure is worth all the other effort.
