What about a smaller kayak with a very large cockpit?
Would need a scupper/drainer but so would an SOT.

I have built a timber surfski and the cockpit was very challenging and all up added about 3kg to the overall weight. If I were to do it again, I would build as an open cockpit kayak. I would use foam blocksto reduce cockpit volume.
