Strip: Need some advice about a wooden Kayak cockpit

I started building a guillemot expedition single about 10 years ago and because of a few very bad hurricanes and tornado's in my area, I put it on the back-burner and just recently started back to work on it again. I got it decked completely now and I'm at the point of cutting out for the cockpit and realized I have lost the pattern for the cockpit opening shape. Before I put my kayak up, I drew part of the shape onto the kayak exactly where it should be but I only drew about 1/3 of it on one side. I think I could reproduce that line on the other side and just make a new pattern using those marks. Does the opening have to be exact? What would you do? Thanks.
