Need to read up on ama (outrigger) design for multihulls, it's quite a bit more complicated than it first seems. When the ama is downwind the sail pressure wants to push the ama under water, so there is no chance that it'll plane, the trick is to minimize the drag, which isn't all that easy. The sterns need to be well clear of the water while sailing or the drag gets out of control.

Wave piercing amas are a whole 'nother conversation.

I'll have to remember to look at all of this at home, the pictures and vids are blocked here at work and I seem to always forget to bring my laptop (lazy).
