Strip: One Ocean Kayak's Cape Ann Storm LT and SLT

Hello. After a year of lurking around this forum I figured it was time to introduce myself.

I'm a woodworker in Atlanta. I'm currently building a One Ocean Kayak's Cape Ann Storm LT (16.25' x 21.5") for myself and a Storm SLT (15.5' x 21.5") for my wife. I've finished stripping and sanding the hull of my wife's boat and have started on the deck of hers and the hull of mine. I start her boat in September of 2012. After completing the hull the project ground to a halt due to some project pressures at work. A year later I'm back building and getting 4-6 strips done each evening. I'd like to finish this winter so they boats are ready in time for warm weather next year.

I'm using techniques from each of Nick's book (The Strip-Built Sea Kayak), Vaclav's building manual, and Rob's LaughingLoon website and manual, as well as this forum. Much of my inspiration has come from the excellent and very detailed websites by John Caldera and Kurt Maurer. Thanks very much to you both.

I'm using 3/16" basswood and Spanish cedar strips with hand beveling. I briefly considering going stapleless, but decided to go the easier route. I'm using a modified Porter-Cable Model US58T2 upholstery stapler and plenty of 3M green tape.

I'd considered RedFishKayak's soft padeye's but have decided to go with Maroske fittings, just because I like the look of them. I like the simple deck rigging of John Caldera's boat, so I will probably copy that. I'm still undecided on perimeter safety lines, but I will likely end of adding them. My wife and I would like to explore around the islands off the Georgia coast (St. Simons, Jeckyl, Cumberland). The added insurance of the perimeter lines is probably a good investment.

I'm planning on using Vaclav's instructions for carbon coaming and hatch rings, but will probably also incorporate magnetic hatch covers. I'd like to slightly recess the coaming so that the lip is flush with the deck of the kayak.

I'm planning on adding skeg's to both. I'm currently planning on a modified version of Ulf Johansson's design (http://www.johanssonkajak.com/?p=5287), with some improvements from Etienne Muller thrown in.

What else? I've made one cedar Greenland paddle already and need to start on the second one.

Greg
