I had all intentions of building an Oughtred Caledonia Yawl, but changed mid-stream to building a Welsford 6m Whaler. They both have very similar construction, but Welsford uses stringers behind the strakes, making it very easy to just clamp the strake, mark along the stringer, and cut the strake. If you want something more canoe/kayak-like, try the Oughtred McGregor glued lapstrake canoe. It is gorgeous and sails very well.

I chose the 6M Whaler due to the larger capacity and more seakindliness for my offshore seas. Oughtred designs are great and handle seas well, but Welsford's whaler had more freeboard and greater beam. It suits my needs well.
