Hi,
In an effort to store a kayak up near the ceiling of our garage and not spend too much money, I tried a bicycle Hoist from Harbor Freight. And it worked out well. The hoist cost less than $10 on sale. I replaced the questionable cord that came with it for a few dollars more and purchased an 8" 2X6 to attach it to. Throw in a few dollars for carriage bolts and screws and the total cost was just a bit over $20. The catalog number of the hoist model number of the hoist was 95803. The hoist is rated to hold 40 pounds.

I hope this is useful,
John VB

This works also, although sometimes it requires two people but my wife is very helpful. By the way, the straps are from Harbor Freight.
