I have one of these, it goes on any boat that I happen to be using, and lives safely in a woollen sock behind my seat. It only comes out on the rare occasions when I need it, in fog, or at night, and sometimes in unfamiliar waters.

For most kayakers I would think, a compas very rarely needs to be consulted and is just a bump on the deck getting in the way.

When one does need it though one really needs it, and it is of little use if it is shrouded in fog or darkness half a mile away down the foredeck.

I like the strap on because I can locate it where I can see it with my 55 year old eyes. I like it sitting at the front end of the map. This way everything makes sense.
