To address the Carbon Fiber issue. Yes, in my experience carbon fiber does take much more resin to wet out, and since it's opaque you can't often tell if there are dry spots in the fabric. Vacuum pressing it is a great way to eliminate this sort of thing, but that's a bit of a stretch for a one-off project. I don't mean to discourage you- I still did it, and it still looks cool.
