Strip: My Modest Review Of The Outer Island

A few things of note:
I didn't build 100% according to plan. I shortened the length 5%, left the Rocker and Width the same.
I raised the front deck height 1", and copied the cockpit size from my old Shearwater 17.
This is my first all-strip build.
Comfort- As it turns out, it may have been unnecessary to raise the front deck. I can get in & out "butt first" easily with the larger cockpit, and with thigh braces, have a very comfortable position. The deck height is still low enough for good low-angle paddling. Plenty of foot room. I installed DuckWorks adjustable footbraces, and I'm glad that I like them, because they weigh a whopping 1lb. each!
Tracking-Very Good. I had been forewarned that the OI "tends to leecock". What I experience is more like the entire boat making "leeway" when hit with a strong gust, rather like a sailboat, but no drastic turning downwind. Easily compensated. In windless conditions, tracks like an arrow.
Handling In General- By shortening the length 5%, and using the same Rocker measurement, I may have achieved the effect of "more rocker". Course-correcting turns are natural & easy. Sharper turns are made by leaning. I had heard that the OI was stiff-turning, but I disagree. Initial Stability is fairly good, Secondary stability gives a nice catch up to about 45 degrees, after that you're bracing or going over.
Handling In Waves- Of note, my last two builds had stitch hulls. The extra-hard chines, and fine bow & stern made it seem a little "grabby" in waves. This softer- chined stripper seems more "slippery" and forgiving. Downwind, it seems to want to broach more easily if I'm not alert, but once on the wave, It surfs nicely, plenty of buoyancy in the bow.
Speed- My usual cruising pace gives 4 mph. Sprinted over 6 on flat water. Haven't clocked it down a wave yet. Nice glide!

In general, it seems fast, light & nimble. Glad I built it!
