Skip the glue and lash the joints with artificial sinew. That is how I do it all my boats for myself or a client. Never had a joint fail either. If you have to scarf a joint TB3 works just fine. I use it on all my scarf joints. AS LONG as you have a proper fitting joint it hold just fine.

Dacron/polyester is about the cheapest skin. You might find find a cheap cotton canvas tarp but it's hard to work with.
