I am restoring a lightweight race like Kayak that my father gave me. The kayak was built in 1960 by Bill Brigden. The hull is very thin fiberglass and the cockpit is made of marine plywood. The remainder of the top was covered in some form of waterproofed cotton that was stretched over an open framework of cedar (like the wing of a WW1 plane) that provides the shape, slightly higher in the center so the water rolls off. The fabric needs to be replaced. I'm trying to decide what material would be best to replace the original cotton with.

I would imagine there are many newer/ better materials to choose from, can anyone suggest a material?
