Then I built up several layers of epoxy on and around the onlay, similar to fill coats after fiberglassing. I sanded the epoxy down until it was close to the veneer. The purpose here was to build up the area around the veneer so the fiberglass would not have a hump in it and it would look more like an inlay (which is what most people think it is). You also want the fiberglass to lie flat so you don't get air bubbles all around the onlay.
