+1! on wrapping the hatch edges with fiberglass. If you use strips cut on 45 degree bias, they will stretch nicely over the edges. I tape the surfaces top and bottom, apply the glass and epoxy, and trim the excess after it is firm but not completely hard.

The hatch edges are quite vulnerable to bruising until they are protected., and I mean with glass, not just epoxy. I had to re-laminate small areas of mine where delamination resulted from dropping the hatch on the floor before the edges were protected. As mentioned above, you will need enough clearance on the finished installation to place and remove the hatch without binding. I think that binding will eventually damage the hatch even if it has glassed edges.
