Are you a purist? If not you could always use closed cell foam to customize the fit to your liking once you get used to the boat. If you are, I sympathize. I probably wouldn't do it either! Sounds like you just need to split the difference- a little less than the other kayak, a little more than standard.

The 12 footer is going to be wiggly when paddling- quite the other end of the spectrum from the longer boat. I am considering a recovery style kayak for surfing- tailoring the hull to promote planing.
