Strip: Fiberglass tape problem

I fiberglassed my Night Heron hull with a wet out coat of epoxy and decided to run a 4" strip of fiberglass along the keel to give it a little more protection, before I continued on with more epoxy coats. I thought the sealed edge (selvage??) on the tape would flatten out enough to not be a problem. But, alas, I was wrong. Now I am wondering if I can sand it down to the base layer of fiberglass in order to get rid of it. Any recommendations??
Thanks,

Jack
