Do you glue the 'working plank' to the 2nd (saw support) plank?
I'm having trouble visualizing what happens when you get down to something less than an inch wide.
Thanks.

I have no problem with planing down strips to 1/4 if necessary, but I wouldn't want to try it @ 3/16. I've had enough thin stock 'explode' inside the thickness planer!

- in my case when cutting strips with a skilsaw I glue the remnant to the next plank for support and toss the strip with the joint, unless it has nice uniform bending when I keep it as a batten for drawing long curves. For 3/16 strips I cut 1/32 oversize and thickness plane on a table router using 4 fingerboards. I definitely wouldn't want to do that on a planer even if I possessed one! Using the table router it takes a little practice to switch to the "pulling hand" at the end of the strip without leaving a nick in the strip, but it's no big deal. The fingerboards must be close to the bit.

Something I haven't mentioned for a while is my cutting table, which is topped with 2" insulating foam. In my case this is laid over a simple 4 x 1" open frame that is light enough to hang on the workshop wall; the foam is rigid enough it doesn't require an underlay. That allows me to lay the wood (or plywood) on the foam, set the skilsaw blade depth 1/16" beyond the wood thickness and just walk the saw down the cut. As well as strips I can also cut spiled or developed planks from plywood using a small (about 4") panel saw, staying about 1/32" off the line.

A piece of foam used in this way is good for about 4 boats, flipped end to end and turned over, so it's economical and is still good for insulation. Mine is cut to cover a 12' x 32" table; it is no longer as pristine as in the pic as I'm finishing the 4th boat . . .
