Hardened steel is going to rust, have to keep them dry and away from the salt air (yeah I know, nearly impossible).

If they are kept in a drawer that got left open a crack at the wrong time can be all it takes to raise the humidity level and cause the rust, the wood in the drawer would normally suck up the excess moisture except when it's cracked open and has a source of more moisture.
