Paddle: Making a Greenland paddle

Sadly, I discovered once I got home I had left my greenland paddle back on the beach. This was my first Greenland paddle carved when I made my F1 with Brian of Cape Falcon.

He provided a nice piece of cedar and did the majority of the layout.
So are there suggestions for a second one?

I wonder if anyone has done a laminated blank with voids in the paddle to save weight and a solid loom.
Any suggestions for wood that is easily available? The long gone cedar paddle got dinged pretty easily. I was considering putting a strip down the sides and ends of the paddle to make it more ding proof.
I will do a search but have not aquired a lot of skill (luck?) finding the right threads.

Thanks in advance.
