Brian,

I think there are two options.

First use a router with a bisket cutting/ slotting bit to remove the cloth, splines, glue and cap strip. The rest of the skin should fall away. Redo the skin in the same manner. I personally assume you would have to make the slot wider. So I would increase the width from 1/8" to 3/16".

Second remove the skin, fill the slots as best you can, then re-skin with a stitched closure.

Personally I will try to recut the slot wider (first method) and do the Morris spline again. If I need to re-skin a second time I would use a 1/4" slot cutter. Fill the slot with a full depth/ width spline glued in with epoxy and recut the 1/8" slot. Then skin with the Morris spline again.

Actually I think this was a great question. I did attempt to pull out the skin with the current method and I could not get it to start coming out when pulling on one corner - should have been the easiest test method. So I think the method is very strong - possibly too strong to easily re-skin.

If someone finds a better more convenient glue I would really like to hear from them. It might be possible that regular yellow glue would work strength wise, but since there is no epoxy to seal the seal it might not be a good idea. However it might be possible to partially fill the seam before adding the cap strip in order to seal the yellow glue. Unfortunately, epoxy does not generally penetrate the dacron cloth to seal thru the cloth, so you would need to find a way to force the epoxy into the cloth, but only in the groove and not spilling out. I did try something like this and got a random bleed out of the epoxy locally which I could not remove except by reskinning. You should have heard me whinning and crying. Just had to accept a less than perfect finish.

: It looks beautiful and very well executed, but I have one question:
: What happens when you have to replace the skin?
