Yes Ian, the end bulkheads have magnetic water tight hatches for storage and emergency floatation. The Redbird design has fairly tall ends that return back about 12", so when you add a short deck you actually have almost 18" of total length in the storage compartment, although it's obviously quite narrow. It's large enough for a sponge, emergency kit, jacket, etc., so still useful. The attached photo shows the outline of the hatch opening, the pull is a piece of deer antler.
