I've not done this in a wildly long time, but we've got lots of rowers here with a rowing club that hosts a large rowing regatta every fall. They, when they arn't racing and sometimes even when they are, skid the oars across the surface of the water on the return stroke, aids balance it seems and means you don't have to lift the oars so high trying to clear the water. Obviously you'd want the cant set right or you could dig in an oar and go swimming ;)
