The cheap timers with the plastic tabs are no use for anything with a motor but for a resistive load like a hot glue gun they are ideal. I find the electronic ones are fine while you remember how to set them but if you don't use it for a few months then lose the instructions . . .

For anything with a motor like a shop vacuum the heavy duty weatherproof timers (also with the plastic tabs) are a bit pricey but excellent. I have been using one on my 3/4 horse pool pump for years and it won't quit. Saves me what it cost each month or so on electric bills. Several of the cheap type and one of the electronic type burned out fairly quickly doing the same job.
