: Garden variety packing tape works well too. It's ability to stretch
: gives it good clamping power and once you wrap over onto itself,
: it has amazing adhesion and will not slip.

Yup! Whatever works!
Some adhesive tapes leave behind a very sticky residue, so best to test before you commit to using tape.
OTOH, I've managed to glue rubber inner tube strips to my work as well, and had to scrape off the black marks.....
The best tape (though a bit pricey) is sold by the luthier supply shops as 'binding tape' - pretty strong and sticky, with no residue.

Over the years, I've used tape (packing tape, glass-reinforced strapping tape, double thickness masking tape), cord, bungee/shock cord, cotton tape, and inner tube strips for this kind of job. My favorite is inner tube strips- they grip on angles, and you can multiple-wrap to increase the pressure. (Be careful not to crush your work!) Bike shops are glad to give these to you if you ask. A truck inner tube will provide many feet of strip...
