You want to use an EXTERIOR varnish, as it has more UV inhibitors than interior products. For a single-part varnish, I suggest ZAR Exterior Satin Polyurethane.

Any oil-based varnish can be tinted with artist's oil paint.

When it comes to re-coating, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. DON'T rush it! If you apply too many coats too quickly, it will take forever to cure. Typically, 3-5 coats will do the job, depending on the fabric you used and how smooth you want the finish to be.
