A few weeks ago, I put hatches and bulkheads in my Outer Island (which I built in '03 or thereabouts).
I used Jay Babina's method for the hatches:

The tricky part is doing the hatch recess filleting job 'blind'.
I found it easier to work on the inside fillet if the boat was suspended 'upside down'.
The fillet has to be strong. I considered using some small glue blocks as well, but decided against it.
A good light and an inspection mirror helps to check your work.
