Off Topic: Canoe *PIC*

I am going on a 7 day expedition in Woodland Caribou PP later this summer, and I wanted to have a canoe due to the 30+ portages we are going to have. We did Quetico PP with kayaks 2 years ago with 11 portages, and while it was OK, we ended up having to do most of them with 2 trips. This time we wanted a canoe so we can use a portage pack, and I wanted to keep this boat very light for obvious reasons, a one walk portage. 3.2 oz glass (doubled on the football, single everywhere else) 3/16 strips, and strip decks will help, but I really want to do cedar or redwood gunwales instead of ash. I doubt if I would bash this boat on rocks, but I was wondering if anyone here has done a canoe this way, and if so, how well did it hold up? I know this is a very subjective question because use and care make the biggest difference.

Any thoughts?
