The time taken to taper the cheater strips may not be greater than the extra time spent using the heat gun to get the strip to bend enough to stay in place easily.

Becuase you don't have to bend the strips as much, it can reduce the chances of the strip moving very slightly before the glue sets so that a visible glue line appears.

It can be very useful on a hard chine hull if you balance the cheater strips at the bow and stern so that you don't have a strip crossing the chine.

They are easy. They can be invisible. They can reduce a serious problem on hard chine hulls.
