No need to worry about turning back. The repairs are pretty easy with the wood, glass and epoxy. Sand the area well and feather out the existing layer of epoxy/glass away from the damage. Place a patch of glass on and epoxy it on. You will get a good feel for glassing real quick. You will want multiple coats of epoxy with some sanding in between if you are looking to blend the patch in. Also, sand down the entire boat after patching and varnish away. You are in for some hours of repair but you will see a nice change in the boat. Once you spend so much free time on this boat, remind the owner that a nice fresh coat of marine varnish once a year will protect the boat and keep it beautiful.

I bet you are building your own kayak before your year is up.
