Honestly, if you've spent this much time and money building a kayak now is the worst time to skimp on the finish. You'll be looking at it every time you paddle and kicking yourself in the @$$. Spend the extra $$, like what, maybe $50?!?! and get the "good stuff." It IS going to spend a lot of time in the sun. Otherwise it sounds a little penny-wise and pound foolish.
