Strip: Hatch covers

I built the hatch rings per directions in Vaclav's manual with thickened epoxy ramps on each side of the foam strip. When this epoxy was no longer tacky. Approx. 4 hrs. later I laid up 6 layers of 6oz. cloth. I did each layer individually and ended up using excess epoxy as it is an area that is hard to squeegie off the excess. I applied the epoxy with a brush and worked it in with a short bristle brush. I used the plastic on top of this sandwich with the wet sand for weight. This set for 3-4 days before I removed the rings from the bottom of the deck. I trimmed the outside of these rings without any problems. When I trimmed the inside of the rings to within 1/4" of the foam strip I discovered the glass layers had not adhered to the thickened epoxy very well. Both rings went into the trash. I am now ready to build them again. I apparently need to know more about this process than I do even though Vaclav's directions and drawings are very self explanatory it seems I am a little short on technique knowledge. Suggestions??
Thank you very much.
Randy
