The Greeley expedition--what a nightmare!
For some relief and inspiration:
Four Against the Arctic-Shipwrecked for six years at the top of the world. David Roberts.
In the Land of the White Death Valerian Albanov (They make a kayak!)
Fatal Passage: The Story of John Rae, the Arctic Hero Time Forgot --Ken McGoogan

I read Jerry Kobalenko's book. Also knew Bob Cochran who traveled Ellesmere Island twice with him.

I better get up there before I get too old.

Thanks for posting this as I was not previously aware of the
: expedition. This was truly an epic journey.

: I've been to Ellesmere twice and it is one of the most beautiful
: and forbidding places on earth. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

: For more on Ellesmere see Jerry Kobalenko's "The Horizontal
: Everest" and Jim Brandenburg's classic "White Wolves,
: Living With an Arctic Legend".

: And for a truly harrowing story of the dangers inherent there,
: check out Guttridge's story of the disastrous expedition led by
: Adolphus Washington Greeley in the late 19th century,
: "Ghosts of ape Sabine".
