I use the wet and a heat gun to shrink the holes then I also use a water based filler but only right before I glass, after all the fairing is done. The water based filler sands very easily and that can be done by hand just before you glass.

I've been using Elmer's filler, sold by HD, the red oak color is pretty close to red cedar.
