: I purchased a Walnut GP from Shaw & Teeney and Sam burnished
: the paddle with pure LINSEED OIL. It came out beautiful, showed
: fiddleback, with black streaks a little sap wood and non-tacky
: surface.
: The paddle looked like a well used patina finish was rubbed on from
: years of use with no dings. It looks so beautiful I decided not
: to get it wet. My grandson may have other ideas though.
: Hope this helps. Give Sam a call for his procedure,he will welcome

I make and sell GPs from old growth western red cedar and I finish them with 4 or 5 coats of Tung oil. I realy wasn't happy with the brand you are using and swithched to the Mimwax product. Tung oil is great for protection of the wood but I've found that a couple of light coat of quality spar varnish provides a beautiful and durable finish. A light sanding with 400 mesh sandbaper between the Tung oil and Spar varnish ads to the finish.
