That link is very clear. What I do in addition is to remask about a half inch from the taped join each side for the first fill coat, then strip the tape, then remask again another half inch from that point for the next fill coat, etc.

This leaves a series of epoxy steps from the glass down to the hull which makes it easier to get a flat feather.
