Wikipedia: propane gives the basics.
burning propane in low oxygen produces (along with CO2 and Water) CO (carbon monoxide)
This can happen after a propane heater has been going inside for a while.

I was curious why it was OK to burn methane inside but there are warnings on the side of the propane cylinders not to.
Important difference between methane and propane. Methane is lighter than air -- got a leak, open the windows and let it air out.
Propane is heavier than air--it settles creating a possible explosion hazard, opening the window might not be enough.

I agree with insulate before heating. Even plastic sheeting blocking the gaps in a wall will help a lot.

You can also get an infrared temperature gauge (with a laser) on Amazon. I got one for about $20. You can spot leaks with it--but I'm guessing up in the Great White North-the inside/outside temperature difference is more easily detectable than here in sunny California.

Keep in mind CO builds up, it takes several days to clear from your body, and it doesn't take much to kill ya.

: I am certain the propane burner is not perfect, but CO emissions
: from it seem to be rather low. A propane burner and a CO
: monitor, appear to me to be a pretty good solution.
